Story
Set in ancient mythical Scotland, Brave tells the tale of a
young princess struggling with her identity looking to break away from her
perceived fate. Unfortunately she achieves this by accidentally setting a grizzly
curse on her mother and subsequently our young heroine Merida (Kelly McDonald)
sets on a heart-warming mission to rescue her mother, returning balance to the
kingdom. Almost.
Compared to Pixar’s usual excellent fare with films like Toy
Story, Up and Finding Nemo, this movie stumbles slightly with Disney
encroaching quite heavily on the final result, but it doesn’t stop it being a
lovely and charming piece of cinema. It’s beautifully animated and brilliantly funny
with some excellent Scottish caricatures and talented voice acting going on,
yet at the same time it’s heart-warming and sweet with a story of family values
at its core. Pixar again have provided a film which can be appreciated by the children
and adults alike.
As we’ve come to expect from Pixar, Brave is a beautiful movie
to watch, but their imagining of mythical Scotland is particularly spectacular and
a wonder to behold. The Scottish landscape is also perfectly complemented by a
beautifully composed Celtic folksy score. All that aside though I’ll admit I
was expecting slightly more from this film. Without going into too many
spoilers, I was frankly expecting the meaning of changing your fate to be a
little different to simply changing yourself or a loved one into a bear. Maybe I
totally misjudged the film before watching it but I was expecting a little more
of a fantastical adventure from the tagline and trailer.
That’s not to say I didn’t thoroughly enjoy Brave though, I
did and think many will and should. It’s laugh out loud funny all the way
through with a perfect blend of witty humour and slapstick, if weighted
slightly in slapstick’s favour! A personal highlight involved the fiendishly hilarious
trio of little ginger brothers running around causing havoc and a bunch of
laughs despite having no lines at all. Similarly, the Young McGuffin’s utterly
unintelligible Aberdeen dialect provides a wonderful source of humour. All this
of course before we even mention Billy Connolly, or any of the other characters
with actual understandable lines.
