Animated films are always a treat on screen for their story,
voice-overs and the effects given by the masterminds at work. The given
characters are nothing short of superhumans and can be made to do almost
anything in their films. While these films get undivided attention and
instant fan following from kids of all ages, they also appeal to adults
who inevitably have to watch these films ’cause of their children, while
few may also watch animated films out of interest in the animated and
fantasy world.
After
a successful stint on Indian television (the show is telecast on Pogo),
the animation content providers Green Gold Animations in association
with PVR Pictures present “Chhota Bheem and the Curse of Damyaan” that
releases in theatres this Friday. With the summer vacations on, the time
is right for the film’s release. Kids love Chhota Bheem’s character
because he epitomises what every kid aims to be – the ideal child, liked
by all. Besides, he is strong and witty all the same, is always there
to help his fellow villagers in despair. His friends namely – Jaggu,
Chutki, Raju, the bully Kalia and his sidekicks, the twins, Dholu-Bholu;
accompany him on all his adventures. Bheem is the ultimate saviour for
Dholakpur, his village.
While
there have been varied series of Bheem’s adventures in the televised
version, the director-producer of the film, Rajiv Chilaka has used
elements of friendship, adventures, magic, time travel etc. in the film.
Made on a rather small budget of approximately 4 crores, the film did
not exceed expectations in anyway. The animation, for one, could have
been better. Understandably, an animation film requires a lot more time
than a regular film, however, when one is already spending a set amount
of time on creating a complete motion picture, then the effort shouldn’t
look something as half-hearted as it could look here. For a non-kid
audience, the glitches were too many to forgo scrutiny. The voice-overs
too could have been done better. Unfortunately, it all seemed very
half-baked. The storyboard however was good. The film however, turned
out to be less than perfect in its final outcome.
Nonetheless,
the film will gain all its brownie points only because of its high
ranking on the popularity metre. Hoping that this film is able to
recover its cost in a week-long running time, of course it won’t become a
rage as much as the television show, but a good one-time family outing
at the theatre is not a bad idea. Hoping to see better content rolled
out in the coming years with the boom in the animation industry in
India, there is perhaps no comparison with international standards here,
however there sure must be a goal that any business model hopes to
achieve. Hence I am positive that the film-making prowess will improve
with the passage of time.
